Participation into the SET EXPO 2024 in Sao Paulo, Brazil

 SET EXPO 2024, one of the largest broadcasting equipment exhibitions in Latin America, was held in Sao Paulo, Brazil, from August 19 to 22, organized by the Brazilian Society of Television Broadcasting Technology (SET). The number of participants increased by 50% from last year to over 21,000 and there were more than 122 exhibiting companies, together with the latest technological trends toward the next-generation digital terrestrial TV technology of Brazil (TV 3.0), contributing to a big success.

3. Opening Ceremony
 The opening ceremony started at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 20. The Brazilian National Anthem was sung, opening remarks were made by Mr. Carlos Fini, SET President, and Mr. Juscelino Filho, Brazilian Minister of Communications, followed by a speech by Mr. Takuo Imagawa, Vice-Minister for Policy Coordination of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, gave a lecture on the friendly relations with Brazil. Mr. Leonard Jenkins, President of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers of America (SMPTE), gave a keynote speech to the effect that “The broadcasting industry is in a very difficult situation, but comprehensive innovation and purposeful transformation are important”.

4. Conference
 The next generation of Brazil’s digital terrestrial television broadcasting TV 3.0, innovative technologies, business, and other topics were presented and discussed, with simultaneous Portuguese and English interpretation provided at all venues.
 The first day’s session featured presentations by four experts from various industries on their perspectives as journalists and program producers in a world where AI is becoming more prevalent. From Japan, Mr. Kohei Kambara, Chief Leader of NHK Science and Technology Research Laboratories, gave a presentation titled “AI Studies and its application of NHK STRL,” in which he discussed NHK’s research and program production efforts using AI. He was followed by a question-and-answer session on countermeasures against “Fake News” in the wake of the spread of AI.
 In the “SET International Journal of Broadcasting Technology” session on the last day of the conference, Mr. Kohei Kambara (NHK), Chief of the DiBEG Task Force on Next Generation Broadcasting, presented on the Advanced ISDB-T enhancements (multi-layer coding and robust mobile reception utilizing sub-layers) that were exhibited at STRL Open House 2024.

5. Japan Pavilion, ARIB/DiBEG Booth
 ARIB/DiBEG and four other companies (NHK, NEC, JTEC, Hitachi Kokusai Electric) exhibited at the Japan Pavilion set up by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications.
 ARIB/DiBEG, in collaboration with Mackenzie University, exhibited a working model of a next-generation terrestrial digital broadcasting transmission and reception system that uses Advanced ISDB-T for the physical layer and Route/Dash for the transport layer. NHK experts in the physical and multiplex layers also participated in the event and gave explanations.
 As for the exhibits of the four companies, NHK introduced the latest research and development related to advanced terrestrial digital television broadcasting technology in Japan and future broadcasting technology exhibited at the STRL Open House using panels and videos. NEC gave a technical exhibition of VVC real-time encoders/decoders and a panel explanation of the status of TV3.0 indoor experiment. JTEC exhibited panels, demonstrations and videos of a comprehensive disaster prevention ICT system that links the Emergency Warning Broadcast System (EWBS) and the Common Alerting Protocol (CAP). Hitachi Kokusai Electric exhibited a static display of a microwave transmitter/receiver for digital terrestrial TV and an ISDB-T transmitter.
